Vedanta Challenges Adani’s $4 Billion Jaiprakash Deal in Supreme Court
Indian billionaire Anil Agarwal has moved the Supreme Court of India challenging fellow tycoon Gautam Adani’s winning bid for the bankrupt Jaiprakash Associates, intensifying the battle over a $4 billion portfolio of prime assets. The portfolio includes real estate projects, power and cement units, and the country’s only Formula One track, the Buddh International Circuit.
Agarwal’s Vedanta Limited has argued that its $1.8 billion offer for the assets was financially superior to Adani’s $1.5 billion bid. However, the creditor committee and an Indian tribunal ruled in favour of Adani Group, citing its higher upfront cash component as a decisive factor. Vedanta has now sought a pause on the acquisition, requesting the apex court to review the process and hear its objections.
The outcome of the legal challenge could significantly impact Adani Group’s real estate expansion ambitions, including major redevelopment projects such as Dharavi. The deal also carries broader implications for reviving Formula One racing in India, which has been stalled for over a decade. Adani’s son, Karan Adani, recently expressed personal interest in bringing F1 back, adding further stakes to the high-profile corporate showdown.
