JioStar Ends Bangladesh IPL Broadcast Deal Amid Payment Default and Political Tensions
JioStar, the entertainment venture backed by Reliance and Disney, has terminated its Indian Premier League (IPL) broadcast agreement in Bangladesh after its local partner failed to meet payment obligations. The company ended its sublicensing deal with TSports, stating that repeated payment defaults forced the immediate termination of the contract, leaving the IPL without a local broadcaster in Bangladesh for the ongoing season.
The decision comes amid ongoing uncertainty over Bangladesh’s earlier ban on IPL broadcasts, imposed in January following political and diplomatic tensions between India and Bangladesh. The ban was linked to the Kolkata Knight Riders’ decision to drop Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman, which sparked controversy and strained public sentiment. Even if Bangladesh lifts the ban, JioStar’s termination means no broadcaster is currently in place to air the tournament.
IPL, valued at $18.5 billion and hugely popular among Bangladeshi cricket fans, now faces a major broadcast gap in the country. The move also extends to the Women’s Premier League, where JioStar has similarly ended its deal over payment issues. The development highlights the combined impact of financial disputes and geopolitical tensions on cricket broadcasting in the region.
