Starbucks to Set Up Global Tech Centre in Chennai
US coffee chain Starbucks plans to establish a global capability centre (GCC) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and hire around 800 technology professionals, according to the Tamil Nadu state government. The investment amount has not been disclosed.
The centre will support Starbucks’ global operations, with the company citing Chennai’s skilled workforce, lower employee attrition and strong infrastructure as key factors behind the decision. Starbucks currently operates around 500 cafes in India through its joint venture with Tata Consumer Products.
Chennai is already a major hub for global capability centres, hosting technology operations for companies including Citi, Barclays and American Express. India has more than 2,100 GCCs employing around 2.36 million people, with these centres increasingly handling areas such as software development, finance and research and development.
