India’s First Win in Tokyo Olympics; Mirabai Chanu wins silver in weightlifting
India opens medal table at Tokyo Olympics. In the women’s 49 kg weight category, India’s Mirabai Chanu won silver. Chanu put out excellent performances in Snatch, Clean and Jerk. The historic achievement was lifting 202 kg. She easily conquered 87 kg in snatch and 115 kg in jerk. Chanu is the second Indian to win a medal in weightlifting in Olympic history.
This is the first time that India has won a medal in weightlifting after Karnam Malleshwari. India won the medal after 21 years in this category. In 2000, Karnam Malleshwari won bronze in Sydney.
Earlier, Olympic medalist Karnam Malleshwari had said that she expects good news from the weightlifting arena. Mirabai Chanu, who is playing for India today, is the best player. Karnam Malleshwari, who won bronze in weightlifting at the Sydney Olympics, told that she is proud of the increased representation of women in the Indian team.
