India Holds Firm for Better Terms in U.S. Trade Deal Talks
India has refused to rush into an interim trade agreement with the United States, insisting on better terms before signing any deal. According to officials, New Delhi wants assurances that it will receive tariff advantages over competitors such as China and that no additional U.S. tariffs will be imposed after an agreement is reached. Talks remained inconclusive despite recent negotiations between officials from both countries.
The Indian government believes its stronger economic position has given it greater leverage in the negotiations. Rising exports, easing oil prices, and new trade agreements with countries such as the United Kingdom, along with ongoing discussions with the European Union, have strengthened India’s confidence. Officials also said the government will not compromise on key sectors, including agriculture.
While Washington continues to express confidence that an agreement can be reached, differences remain over trade concessions and tariff policies. Analysts say India’s improving economy and expanding global trade partnerships have reduced the urgency for a quick deal, allowing the country to negotiate from a stronger position while seeking a more favourable long-term agreement.
