Cyclone Arnab Kills Six Along India’s Eastern Coast

Cyclone Arnab killed at least six people and disrupted electricity supplies across parts of India’s eastern coast, officials said on Thursday. The storm brought heavy rain and strong winds after making landfall in Andhra Pradesh early Wednesday. Local media reported a higher death toll of nine, while the state government confirmed six fatalities.

The cyclone damaged at least 15,000 electricity poles, according to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. Power had been restored in most districts, except Konaseema and West Godavari. More than 180,000 people were evacuated across Andhra Pradesh and Odisha ahead of the storm, while some schools closed and train and flight services were cancelled.

Meanwhile, a cargo vessel flying the Marshall Islands flag, carrying 20 crew members, remained stranded off Andhra Pradesh amid rough seas. Authorities said technology helped identify areas at greatest risk and limit casualties and property damage. Cyclone Arnab developed over the Bay of Bengal, a region frequently affected by tropical cyclones.
