Indian Recyclers Seek Scrap Import Rule Change
India’s leading recyclers’ body has asked the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to replace the existing pre-shipment inspection system for imported scrap with inspections at Indian ports, according to a letter reviewed by Reuters.
The Material Recycling Association of India (MRAI) said several countries supplying scrap to India either lack authorised inspection agencies or rely on a single agency. India imports around 13 million metric tons of recyclable metal scrap annually from more than 160 countries, with about 2,500 containers entering the country each day.
MRAI warned that continued uncertainty could result in container backlogs, detention and demurrage costs, disruptions to international supply contracts and higher raw-material costs. The DGFT had not immediately responded to Reuters’ request for comment.
