Air India Appoints Tewolde to Lead Turnaround
Air India has appointed former Ethiopian Airlines CEO Tewolde Gebremariam to lead the airline’s next phase of transformation, signalling a stronger focus on safety, operational efficiency, and profitability. Tewolde, who successfully guided Ethiopian Airlines through the 2019 Boeing 737 MAX crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, replaces Campbell Wilson and is expected to steer the Tata-owned carrier through significant operational challenges.
Air India continues to face mounting pressures, including restoring passenger confidence after the 2025 Boeing 787 Dreamliner crash, modernising its ageing fleet, reducing losses, and managing higher operating costs caused by Pakistan’s airspace restrictions. The airline’s internal profile describes Tewolde as a “change leader” with extensive crisis-management experience and a proven record of expanding Ethiopian Airlines into Africa’s largest carrier.
Having previously managed Ethiopian Airlines’ India and Southeast Asia operations from Mumbai, Tewolde is familiar with the Indian aviation market. His appointment comes as Air India works to strengthen safety compliance, improve reliability, and accelerate its long-term turnaround under the Tata Group.
