Akash Ambani Takes Centre Stage as Jio Prepares for IPO

Akash Ambani, the eldest son of billionaire Mukesh Ambani, is stepping into the spotlight as Jio Platforms prepares for its stock market debut. The company’s $3.2 billion initial public offering (IPO) was fully subscribed within two hours of opening for public bidding. As managing director of Jio Platforms and chairman of its telecoms business, Akash is increasingly taking a leading role in the company’s growth and strategic direction, signalling a potential shift in the Reliance Group’s leadership succession.

Akash recently led Jio Platforms’ IPO presentation, highlighting its customer base of more than 533 million users and its financial performance, while his father stayed away from the event. He is also involved in major business decisions and manages relationships with prominent investors, including Meta, which holds nearly a 10% stake in Jio. Industry executives describe him as an approachable leader with a strong interest in technology. The IPO has attracted considerable investor interest, with strong demand from retail investors, employees and existing Reliance shareholders.

Jio, which launched in 2016 and transformed India’s telecom market with affordable voice and data services, is now seeking to establish itself as more than a telecommunications provider. The company is expanding into digital services, 5G connectivity and artificial intelligence (AI). Akash has highlighted plans for AI-powered call summaries and transcription in 12 Indian languages, positioning Jio as a technology platform focused on India’s digital future. His growing public role also echoes the legacy of his grandfather, Dhirubhai Ambani, who helped build Reliance’s reputation among retail investors.
