Dr Reddy’s Launches New Generic Ozempic Brands Amid Supply Disruption
Dr Reddy’s Laboratories has expanded its portfolio of generic semaglutide medicines in India with two new brands, Obeda Pro and Obeda Plus, following supply disruptions affecting its original Obeda injection. The new products are manufactured by Hetero Labs, while the original injectable was produced by OneSource Specialty Pharma. Distributors told Reuters that the company may shift its focus to the newer brands after supplies of Obeda were halted in July due to technical evaluation.
Dr Reddy’s launched Obeda in India in March after semaglutide lost patent protection, triggering competition among domestic pharmaceutical companies to offer more affordable alternatives to Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic. The company recalled Obeda injections in July, while its oral version remained available. Although distributors suggested the new brands could replace the original injection, Dr Reddy’s said their development and launch planning began before the supply disruption and that the launches should not be interpreted as evidence of a replacement strategy.
The development comes as India’s semaglutide market expands amid rising demand for diabetes and weight-management treatments. Research firm Pharmarack estimates that the domestic semaglutide market could reach ₹80 billion by 2030. Dr Reddy’s sold around 442,000 units of generic semaglutide in India through September, compared with approximately 151,000 units sold by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries. However, the company has not confirmed whether the technical issue affecting Obeda injections has been resolved.
