Singapore Defends Air India Investment Amid Funding Debate
Singapore has defended its investment in Air India after the Indian airline sought $1.5 billion in fresh equity from its owners, Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines. The debate intensified in Singapore after opposition lawmakers questioned whether funds from state investor Temasek should be used to support the airline.
Singapore’s Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow said overseas investments can face difficult periods and stressed that companies must remain committed during challenging times. He also clarified that Air India’s losses do not automatically become Singapore Airlines’ liabilities, and the funding request does not require Singapore Airlines to provide additional capital.
Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong condemned anti-Indian abuse linked to the debate, while Senior Minister K Shanmugam called for police scrutiny of racist comments targeting Temasek executives. Opposition lawmaker Kenneth Tiong maintained that his concerns were commercial rather than racial and rejected racism and xenophobia.
