A sigh of relief for Arundhati Roy, as Supreme Court stays the criminal proceedings against her

Supreme Court on Monday stayed the criminal contempt proceedings against Arundathi Roy. She was charged with Criminal contempt of court on December 2015 by Bombay High Court for writing an article in one of the leading magazine against the arrest of DU Professor GN Saibaba. Saibaba arrested in 2014 was said to have alleged maoist link and his bail plea was rejected by the High court in 2015. Terming the judgment nasty, and voicing against the judiciary verdict Arundathi was charged with contempt of court. The court observed her comments and also her statements which depicted calling the government as well as police ‘abductor and thief’.

Case herd by the Nagpur bench of High Court which included Chief Justice JS Khehar and Justice DY Chndrachud, granted the leave of appeal to the Author.
