Transgender discrimination continues as 9 out of 21 hired by ‘Kochi Metro’ resign.

Most of us considered it to be a great achievement when the news of Kerala movement hiring 21 transgender to work with Kochi Metro hit the headlines. The very first thought that came in our mind was ‘India is progressing’, the must needed change was happening, a new society where there is no discrimination was being created. But the shattering truth that has come across is the resignation of 9 employees , not because of work pressure, but on account of the pressure from society. With time we need to change out mentality as well but seems like Kochi house owners have been reluctant to accept them into our society and are being shunned away because of their nature.

In 2015 we saw the appointment of Manabi Bandopadhyay as the India’s first transgender college Principal. But lack of cooperation from the society that included her colleagues and her students forced her to step down from her post. The step that was supposedly the stone to a great foundation was crashed by the society.

Every individual wants to feel connected with the society. No man can live in isolation. But the hardships faced by this community put them in isolation from rest of the society. Government and NGO’s have been trying to hard to make them feel home with the society by making them do normal jobs just like other people in society , but seems like society has just not come in terms with this. To feel connected there should be an equal reciprocated reaction from all the sides. But seems like the more open and secular we show from outside, the more are we restricted from inside.
