L&T Signs Long-Term Green Ammonia Supply Deal with ITOCHU
Indian infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro announced on Wednesday that its green energy arm has entered into an agreement with Japanese trading firm ITOCHU Corporation for the long-term supply of 300,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually. The deal marks a significant step in strengthening India’s role in the global clean energy supply chain.
Under the agreement, L&T Energy GreenTech will produce and supply green ammonia from its proposed facility in Gujarat. The fuel is emerging as a key alternative for decarbonising the shipping sector, aligning with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions across maritime industries. ITOCHU plans to utilise the supply to build a global green ammonia network spanning major shipping routes, including Singapore.
The development reflects a growing trend of Indian firms securing international contracts in the green energy space, particularly with countries such as Japan and South Korea. The partnership also supports India’s broader ambition to produce around 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen and its derivatives, including green ammonia, by 2030, backed by government incentives and policy support.
