WhatsApp Bets on Fintech Veteran to Drive Payments Growth
Meta has appointed Indian fintech entrepreneur Kunal Shah to lead WhatsApp, signaling its ambition to expand the platform’s payments and commerce ecosystem. The move comes alongside Meta’s $900 million investment in Shah’s Bengaluru-based fintech company CRED, where he will retain his stake while stepping back from day-to-day executive responsibilities.
Shah is widely known for founding Freecharge and later launching CRED, which grew into a major player in India’s digital payments space. Meta executives said his deep understanding of consumer behavior, product development, and payments innovation makes him well-suited to guide WhatsApp’s next phase of growth, particularly in emerging markets such as India, Brazil, and Indonesia.
Despite having over 500 million users in India, WhatsApp remains a smaller player in digital payments compared to rivals like PhonePe and Google Pay. Industry experts believe Shah’s experience navigating payments, regulations, and consumer-focused technology could help Meta strengthen WhatsApp’s position as it pursues its vision of becoming a comprehensive “super app” offering messaging, commerce, and financial services.
