Wealthy Indians Continue Pursuing Global Residency as Citizenship Programmes Become Costlier and More Regulated
Demand among affluent Indians for overseas residency and second citizenship programmes remains strong, driven by the desire for greater global mobility, access to international education, business expansion opportunities and wealth diversification. India continues to be a major source market for investment migration programmes, particularly in Europe, where residency options allow investors to retain their Indian citizenship while gaining broader international access.
However, obtaining a second passport is becoming increasingly expensive. Caribbean nations, once known for offering affordable citizenship-by-investment schemes, have significantly raised minimum investment thresholds, with entry costs now starting above $235,000. Governments are also tightening regulations through stricter due diligence, biometric verification and enhanced compliance measures to meet international standards and improve programme credibility.
At the same time, visa-free travel benefits linked to some citizenship programmes are facing greater scrutiny from countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom. As costs rise, newer and lower-priced options are emerging in Africa and the Pacific region, creating a split market between premium, compliance-focused programmes and budget-friendly alternatives. For Indian investors, global residency remains attractive, but the path is becoming more expensive, regulated and geopolitically complex.
