Vedanta Plant Blast Kills 17 in Chhattisgarh

At least 17 people were killed and 36 injured after a suspected boiler explosion at a power plant operated by Vedanta Ltd in Chhattisgarh. The incident occurred at the Singhitarai facility, around 230 km from Raipur, prompting authorities to immediately suspend operations at the 600-megawatt unit. Officials said the blast caused significant damage and casualties among workers present at the site.

Preliminary investigations suggest the explosion may have been triggered by overheating in a boiler tube, according to local police. The plant, partly operated and maintained by NTPC GE Power Services, is now under scrutiny as authorities begin a detailed probe into safety lapses and technical failures. Vedanta described the incident as “unfortunate” and said it is working to determine the exact cause.

The shutdown comes at a critical time as India prepares for peak summer power demand, with several coal plants already delaying maintenance due to fuel supply constraints linked to geopolitical tensions. Vedanta had acquired the 1,200 MW plant in 2022 through bankruptcy proceedings, though only half its capacity was operational at the time of the accident.
