India’s $1 House Help Boom Raises Safety Questions

India’s instant home-help startups are witnessing explosive growth by offering household services like cleaning, chopping, and mopping for as little as $1 an hour. Companies such as Pronto, Snabbit, and Urban Company are rapidly expanding, driven by rising demand from urban consumers seeking affordable, on-demand domestic help. With India’s home cleaning market estimated at $9 billion across 53 million households, these startups are training thousands of workers while using aggressive discounts to attract customers.

For workers, the model offers a chance to earn significantly more than many traditional low-wage jobs. Domestic helpers can earn up to $5,000 annually through app-based bookings, which is well above India’s per capita income. This has drawn many women to the sector, including those leaving poorly paid jobs in call centres or informal domestic work. At the same time, customers are embracing the convenience, using these services for everything from unpacking homes to small chores, reflecting India’s growing preference for quick, low-cost household assistance.

However, the rapid expansion has raised serious safety concerns, especially for women workers entering private homes alone. Startups have introduced SOS buttons, helplines, and self-defence training, but activists argue these measures are not enough in a country where harassment risks remain high. Despite mounting losses due to discounts and worker incentives, investors remain optimistic that the companies that solve these safety and sustainability challenges could unlock major long-term gains in India’s evolving home services market.
