Uber and JSW Group Partner to Deploy Custom Electric Vehicles for India’s Ride-Hailing Market
Ride-hailing giant Uber has signed an agreement with JSW Group, a prominent Indian steel-to-cement conglomerate, to develop and deploy electric vehicles (EVs) across India. The newly formed partnership aims to design vehicles specifically tailored for the unique demands of the domestic ride-hailing market. By introducing these specialized cars, both companies intend to significantly scale up EV adoption within the commercial transport sector, though specific financial details of the agreement have not yet been disclosed.
This collaboration aligns with broader automotive expansions for JSW Group. Earlier this year, JSW MG Motor—a joint venture between JSW Group and China’s SAIC Motor—announced an ambitious plan to invest up to $440 million. This funding is earmarked to expand its manufacturing facility in India and to launch a new lineup of hybrid and electric vehicle models, which could potentially support the fleet requirements of this new ride-hailing initiative.
The tie-up comes at a pivotal time for India’s green transition, where electric vehicles accounted for 7.29% of total automotive sales as of the third quarter of fiscal year 2026. Currently, the vast majority of these EV purchases are concentrated in the two- and three-wheeler segments, according to data from the India Brand Equity Foundation. The push by Uber and JSW Group represents a major step toward accelerating electrification in the four-wheeler commercial space.
