India and African Union Postpone New Delhi Summit Due to Escalating Ebola Outbreak
India and the African Union (AU) have officially decided to postpone the fourth India-Africa Forum Summit, which was scheduled to take place in New Delhi from May 28 to May 31. India’s foreign ministry announced the decision on Thursday, citing the “emerging public health situation” in parts of Africa. While the ministry’s statement did not explicitly name the disease, the postponement serves as a direct response to a worsening Ebola outbreak on the African continent.
The high-profile summit aimed to bring together ministers and global leaders to deepen strategic cooperation between India and African nations across several key sectors. The agenda was set to focus on trade, investment, digital technology, innovation, development, sustainability, and global governance. Following bilateral discussions regarding the evolving health crisis, both parties mutually agreed that it would be advisable to delay the gathering, with new dates to be finalized in due course.
The postponement comes amid mounting international concern over an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo involving a rare strain of Ebola for which no vaccine currently exists. According to the World Health Organization, the outbreak began two months ago and has already resulted in 600 suspected cases and 139 suspected deaths. The lack of preventative medical tools for this specific variant has heightened regional and international caution, prompting the suspension of major diplomatic events.
