Searing Heat Wave Drives India’s Peak Power Demand to Record 270 GW Amid Regional Outages

An intense and prolonged heat wave has driven India’s peak power demand to a historic record of 270.73 gigawatts, triggering localized electricity outages across several regions. Fueled by the El Niño weather pattern, vast areas of the subcontinent are experiencing a severe surge in temperatures this May, dramatically increasing the nationwide requirement for cooling. This unprecedented surge has caused peak electricity demand to break records for four consecutive days this week, officially surpassing the federal power ministry’s initial summer expectations of 270 GW with over a month of the season still remaining.

The rapidly escalating consumption has placed immense strain on the country’s electrical grid, leading to localized nighttime power outages despite an adequate overall energy supply during the daytime. Experts highlight that while India boasts approximately 228 GW of non-fossil fuel power capacity, it still fundamentally relies on coal for more than 70% of its total power generation. Analysts warn that the inherently intermittent nature of renewable energy sources, combined with sudden spikes in temperature-driven demand, leaves multiple regions highly vulnerable to temporary supply deficits and subsequent power cuts.

Looking ahead, industry analysts and corporate rating agencies caution that the stress on the national power infrastructure could intensify even further if the severe heat waves persist across major parts of the country. Although the country-wide energy deficit hovered at a minimal 0.2% and the peak deficit stood at 0.1% in April, the relentless climate conditions are actively exposing vulnerabilities in regional distribution. With the weather office projecting an above-average number of heat-wave days to continue through May, balancing the grid remains a critical challenge for the federal power ministry.
