Telegram Moves Delhi High Court Against Temporary Block Imposed Over Exam Fraud Concerns
Messaging platform Telegram has approached the Delhi High Court challenging an Indian government order that temporarily blocked access to the app to curb exam-related fraud. The restriction, which came into effect on Tuesday, was aimed at stopping channels allegedly claiming to provide leaked question papers in advance.
According to reports, Telegram’s lawyers mentioned the matter before the court on Wednesday, and the petition is expected to be heard shortly. The move has sparked debate over the use of broad internet restrictions to tackle exam paper leaks and online malpractice.
Telegram founder Pavel Durov criticised the ban, saying it punishes the platform’s 150 million users in India rather than those responsible for leaking exam materials. The controversy comes after the cancellation of a major medical entrance exam taken by 2.3 million students following allegations of a question paper leak, which triggered protests and demands for accountability.
