Automakers Prepare for Flex-Fuel Vehicle Launches as India Pushes for Ethanol-Powered Mobility

India’s automobile industry is gearing up for a major shift towards flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs), with several car and two-wheeler manufacturers preparing models that can run on up to 100% ethanol. The move has gained urgency amid high crude oil prices and energy security concerns, with the government recently adding E100 (pure ethanol) to vehicle testing and certification standards. Automakers including Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, Tata Motors, Hero MotoCorp and Royal Enfield are among those advancing their FFV plans.

Industry leaders believe FFVs can help reduce India’s dependence on imported oil while boosting farmers’ incomes through higher ethanol demand. Inspired by Brazil’s successful model, manufacturers say the technology is ready and infrastructure is gradually being developed. Maruti Suzuki has already launched the WagonR Bioflex, while Hero MotoCorp recently introduced flex-fuel versions of the HF Deluxe and Splendor Plus.

However, challenges remain. FFVs are costlier than conventional vehicles and ethanol’s lower energy density results in reduced mileage. Experts say E85 and E100 fuels must be significantly cheaper than petrol to make them attractive to buyers. Limited fuel distribution infrastructure and policy support are also concerns, though industry leaders believe flex-fuel vehicles could become an important part of India’s long-term clean mobility strategy alongside electric vehicles.
