Telecom companies fined Rs 3,050 crore

In 2016, Reliance Jio was fined Rs 3,050 crore by Bharti Airtel and Vodafone-Idea (VI) for denying interconnection facilities. Vodafone-Idea owes Rs 2,000 crore and Bharti Airtel Rs 1,050 crore.

Within weeks of announcing various reforms to support telecom companies in crisis, the government tightened its grip on fines. Airtel is preparing to approach the court stating that it is a unilateral order. The fine was imposed before Airtel and Idea merged.

At that time, Airtel and Vodafone were fined Rs 50 crore for 21 circles and 19 circles for Idea at the same rate. Reliance had approached Geo Troy alleging that companies were already not cooperating in this regard.
