SpiceJet Faces Aviation Regulator Scrutiny
India’s aviation ministry has placed SpiceJet under closer operational and financial monitoring amid the airline’s continuing cash-flow challenges, a government official said on Tuesday. Authorities are monitoring the carrier through the aviation regulator to ensure its financial difficulties do not compromise flight operations or passenger safety.
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said the government was closely watching SpiceJet’s operations and finances, while noting that government intervention in privately operated companies has limits. SpiceJet has received ₹1.5 billion ($15.67 million) in support under the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme.
The airline has faced financial pressure from rising fuel costs, intense competition and a decline in market share. Reuters has also previously reported delays in salary payments to pilots as the carrier sought additional government support.
