India Keeps Energy Drink Label Deadline
India’s food safety regulator, FSSAI, has decided not to extend the 90-day deadline for beverage companies to remove the term “energy drink” from product labels. The decision affects major brands including PepsiCo, Red Bull, Monster Beverage, and Reliance Consumer Products, which had requested up to one year to clear existing stock and update packaging.
The regulator believes current inventories can be sold within 60–90 days and says companies failed to provide detailed state-wise inventory data. Industry sources argue that millions of cans and bottles remain in the market, making compliance within the deadline difficult.
The stricter enforcement comes as India’s fast-growing energy drink market continues to expand. State authorities have already begun seizing products with the disputed labels in some regions, while beverage companies continue discussions with the government, seeking relief from enforcement measures.
