Samsung May Discontinue Galaxy Z TriFold Just Months After Launch

Samsung is reportedly winding down sales of its Galaxy Z TriFold smartphone barely three months after its debut, according to a Bloomberg report. The company is expected to first halt sales in South Korea before gradually discontinuing the device in the United States once current inventory is depleted. The move was foreshadowed earlier this month when Samsung’s official website listed the device as “sold out” and stopped indicating any future restocks, although limited units may still be available at select Samsung Experience Stores in the US.

Launched in December in South Korea and later introduced in the US in January, the Galaxy Z TriFold marked Samsung’s first foray into tri-fold smartphone design. Featuring a dual-hinge mechanism, the device unfolded into a 10-inch tablet-sized display aimed at enhancing multitasking and media consumption. Priced at around $2,899, it was powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and included high-end specifications such as a 200MP camera, 5600mAh battery, and IP48-rated durability. Unlike most Samsung smartphones, the TriFold was sold exclusively through Samsung’s own channels, indicating it was targeted primarily at early adopters rather than the mass market.

Despite its innovative design, the future of the Galaxy Z TriFold remains uncertain. Samsung executives have acknowledged the challenges associated with its complex manufacturing process. Won-Joon Choi, Chief Operating Officer of Samsung’s Mobile Experience division, recently stated that the company has not yet decided whether the device will receive a successor. However, he hinted that some of the tri-fold’s design innovations, particularly its wider display format, could be integrated into future foldable devices, suggesting that while the TriFold itself may fade, its technology could live on.
