Zydus, Lupin Partner to Co-Market Semaglutide Injections Ahead of Patent Expiry
Zydus Lifesciences and Lupin have entered into a licensing and supply agreement to co-market semaglutide injections in India, positioning themselves ahead of the drug’s upcoming patent expiry. Semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, is widely used for treating Type 2 diabetes and has gained popularity for weight management due to its ability to regulate blood sugar levels and appetite.
Under the agreement, Lupin will receive semi-exclusive rights to co-market Zydus’ semaglutide injection under the brand names Semanext and Livarise, while also paying upfront licensing fees along with milestone-based payments. Zydus will manufacture the drug at its Ahmedabad facility and market it under multiple brand names, including Semaglyn, Mashema, and Alterme. Notably, the company’s single adjustable pen design is expected to lower treatment costs by allowing patients to select different doses, unlike conventional single-use injection pens.
The impending patent expiry has sparked intense competition among Indian pharmaceutical companies aiming to capture a share of the rapidly growing diabetes and obesity treatment market. India, which has the second-highest number of adults with diabetes globally, presents a significant opportunity for affordable alternatives. Zydus had already secured regulatory approval earlier this year to produce generic versions, while Dr Reddy’s Laboratories is also expected to launch its own semaglutide injection, Obeda, further intensifying market competition.
