Rupee Hits Record Low Past 92 Amid Middle East War Concerns

The Indian rupee fell beyond the 92-per-dollar mark for the first time, hitting a record low as escalating conflict in the Middle East rattled global financial markets. The currency weakened to 92.17 against the U.S. dollar, surpassing its previous low set in January, with traders expecting the Reserve Bank of India to intervene to prevent sharper losses. Market sentiment turned negative amid fears that the widening war could trigger an energy shock and prolong global inflation pressures.

India’s heavy dependence on imported crude oil — accounting for more than 80% of its needs — has made the rupee particularly vulnerable to rising oil prices. Brent crude has surged more than 13% since the conflict intensified, raising concerns over a higher import bill, widening current account deficit, and faster inflation. Analysts also warned that prolonged instability in the region could reduce remittances from Indian workers in the Middle East and prompt foreign investors to pull funds from Indian markets.

The geopolitical tensions have overshadowed earlier optimism surrounding a potential U.S.-India trade agreement that was expected to support the currency. With risks of disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz threatening global energy supplies, markets remain volatile, and economists caution that sustained high oil prices could weaken India’s macroeconomic outlook through slower growth, higher inflation, and continued pressure on the rupee.
