RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat Urges Indian Families to Have Three Children
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has urged Indian families to have three children each, warning of long-term demographic risks from the country’s declining birth rates. Speaking at an event marking 100 years of the RSS, Bhagwat stressed that India’s population must remain “controlled, yet sufficient” to safeguard national capacity and cultural stability.
India, the world’s most populous nation with 1.46 billion people, has seen its total fertility rate fall below two children per woman, according to the UN Population Fund’s 2025 report. Bhagwat’s remarks reflect concerns among nationalist leaders that declining birth rates across communities could affect demographic balance and long-term growth.
Addressing criticism that the RSS opposes minorities, Bhagwat said the organisation views all Indians as part of one cultural identity regardless of religion. “Our ancestors and culture are the same. Worship practices may differ, but our identity is one,” he said, adding that building mutual trust was key and urging Muslims to shed fears about losing their faith by cooperating with others.
