India Overtakes China in MSCI Index for First Time
India has made a significant stride in the global equity markets, surpassing China in the MSCI investible large-, mid- and small-cap index. This milestone is attributed to India’s robust economic growth and strong investor interest.
Morgan Stanley analysts have noted that India’s weight in the index has risen to 2.35%, exceeding China’s 2.24%. They anticipate further gains for India due to its outperforming stock market, new listings, and improved liquidity. India’s nominal GDP growth rate, significantly higher than China’s, is creating a favorable environment for earnings growth.
This development is expected to attract additional foreign inflows into India, as its rising weight in the MSCI indexes makes it more appealing to global investors. The Indian stock market has been on a strong trajectory this year, with benchmark indices like the Nifty 50 and Sensex registering impressive gains. In contrast, China’s Shanghai Composite index has faced challenges amid economic concerns and property sector issues.
