Rohith Vemula’s Mother Joins Rahul Gandhi On Congress March In Telangana
The mother of Rohith Vemula, a Dalit student at the University of Hyderabad who committed suicide in 2016 as a result of alleged harassment, joined Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday in this city’s “Bharat Jodo Yatra.” Radhika Vemula walked briefly alongside Mr. Gandhi during the morning leg of the “Yatra.”
Radhika Vemula tweeted after the meeting, “Extended solidarity to the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, walked with Rahul Gandhi, and called upon Congress to save the Constitution from the BJP-RSS assault, justice for Rohith Vemula, passing the Rohith Act, increasing representation of Dalits, oppressed sections in higher judiciary, and education for all.
Several party leaders and the Congress posted images of Radhika Vemula strolling with Mr. Gandhi during the “Bharat Jodo Yatra” on their official Twitter accounts.
The 26-year-old Dalit student’s death on January 17, 2016, led to a widespread movement against casteism in higher education institutions.
