Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s Mother Dies At Home In Italy
Paola Maino, the mother of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, passed away on Saturday at her residence in Italy, and her funeral was held on Tuesday, the Congress announced in New Delhi.
The president of the Congress had left on August 23 to see her sick 90-year-old mother.
“Smt. Sonia Gandhi’s mother, Mrs. Paola Maino passed away at her home in Italy on Saturday the 27th August 2022. The funeral took place yesterday,” AICC general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter on Wednesday.
The burial was reportedly attended by Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, all of whom are currently living abroad. The three leaders had been present online on Sunday for a Congress Working Committee meeting when the timetable for the election of the party president was set.
Sonia Gandhi and her family received condolences from President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and leaders of numerous political parties.
“Condolences to Sonia Gandhi Ji on the passing away of her mother, Mrs. Paola Maino. May her soul rest in peace. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the entire family,” Prime Minister Modi tweeted.
Ashok Gehlot, the chief minister of Rajasthan, Bhupesh Baghel, and other Congress leaders sent their sympathies to the party’s chairman and other family members.
“In light of the tragic passing of Mrs. Paola Maino, mother of Congress president Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, the Congress family wishes to convey its sincere condolences. We offer condolences to the bereaved family and offer prayers for the soul of the deceased “The Congress tweeted something on its official account.
“The passing of Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s mother, Mrs. Paola Maino, is deeply saddening. My sincere condolences go out to Priyanka, Rahul, Sonia, and all other family members. God grant them the fortitude to endure this loss. May the soul of the deceased rest in peace, “stated Gehlot on Twitter.
