Relief for actor Vijay; Temporary stay on High Court order imposing Rs 1 lakh fine

Division bench stays Madras High Court single bench order imposing Rs 1 lakh fine on Tamil superstar Vijay. Earlier, the single bench had imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on Vijay’s plea seeking exemption from entry tax on imported Rolls Royce car. The single bench had ordered that the hero in the film should not become a ‘reel hero’ in life.

Vijay filed the appeal through his lawyer Vijay Narayan seeking to withdraw the reference and take action on the delay in registration due to entry tax. At the same time, the two-judge bench demanded that 80 per cent of the entry tax be paid within a week.

On appeal, Vijay had said that the reference to the single bench was very hurtful and should be withdrawn. The lawyer argued that it was not his client who was being asked to pay the entry tax, but the ‘harsh’ references of the court.

The lawyer said that Vijay did not want the case to be dragged out for too long and therefore he should ask the Income Tax Department to send it within a week. The High Court has also asked the Income Tax Department in this regard.
