Priyanka Gandhi not to contest against PM Modi in Varanasi
No surprises can be expected from this constituency this time also. No anti-incumbency factor exists in this constituency. The constituency has witnessed several major developments in the last five years. The mood in the constituency is in favour of the PM. It is believed that it is his confidence in his constituency that has emboldened the PM to turn down the option of contesting in two seats simultaneously.
The Congress party has fielded Ajai Rai once again in Varanasi, where he arrived third in the previous election in which he contested against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and AAP Chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
This time also, his prime rival will be the Indian PM. Unlike the previous election in which the PM contested from two constituencies simultaneously, the PM this time is not contesting from any seat other than Varanasi.
There were speculations that the Congress would field Priyanka Gandhi against the PM in the constituency.
The declaration of Mr Rai’s candidature means there is no point in dreaming about the materialisation of those speculations anymore.
In the previous election, Mr Rai could gain only 75614 votes, which was far less than what the candidate who arrived at the second position secured. The AAP leader, who wristed the second position in Varanasi in the previous election, amassed around 209238 votes.
What the PM secured is around double of what the AAP chief gained. As many as 581022 people of the constituency endorsed the leadership of the BJP leader.
