Moquim’s Letter Sparks Fresh Debate Over Congress Leadership Divide
A letter by Odisha Congress leader Mohammed Moquim to Sonia Gandhi has reignited debate over internal fissures within the Congress, with the BJP seizing on it as evidence of a growing rift between “Team Rahul” and “Team Priyanka”. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla shared excerpts from media reports on X, claiming the communication exposed dissatisfaction with the current leadership structure. He argued that Moquim’s comments highlighted widening tensions and a disconnect between the party’s top brass and its younger voter base.
In the five-page letter, Moquim expressed deep concern over what he called the weakening organisational health of the Congress both in Odisha and nationally. He said the leadership had grown distant from grassroots workers, noting that he was unable to meet Rahul Gandhi for nearly three years despite being an MLA. Moquim further stressed that with 65% of India’s population below the age of 35, the Congress had failed to connect with young citizens under the current leadership model, pointing in particular to Mallikarjun Kharge’s age and style of functioning.
Moquim also criticised the party’s inability to retain young leaders, citing the exits of Jyotiraditya Scindia, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Milind Deora and Jaiveer Shergill as examples of those who felt unheard. He urged the Congress to empower figures such as Priyanka Gandhi, Sachin Pilot, D.K. Shivakumar, A. Revanth Reddy and Shashi Tharoor to rebuild credibility and enthusiasm. While rumours of internal divisions have surfaced before, both Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi have publicly denied any rift, even as conversations around the party’s leadership approach continue to intensify.
