Supreme Court Rejects Bilkis Bano’s Request To Review Its Earlier Order

The Gujarat government was urged to consider the applications for the remission of sentences of 11 convicts in the gang-rape case, while Bilkis Bano’s request for a review of the Supreme Court’s earlier judgement was denied.
During the riots in Gujarat in 2002, Bilkis Bano was the victim of gang-rape and seven members of her family were killed.

Procedures state that appeals of rulings by the Supreme Court are decided in chambers by the judges who participated in the ruling under review. On December 13, a bench of justices Ajay Rastogi and Vikram Nath took the review request under consideration in chamber.

“I am directed to inform you that the review petition above mentioned filed in Supreme Court was dismissed by the court on December 13, 2022,” read a communication sent to Bilkis Bano’s counsel Shobha Gupta by the top court’s assistant registrar.

The gang rape victim had asked for a review of the top court’s ruling on a guilty plea made by a convict on May 13.

According to its policy of July 9, 1992, which required the state government to decide on a remission petition within two months, the top court had requested the state government to take into account the state’s request for the convicts’ early release.

The Gujarati government granted pardons to all 11 of the prisoners, and they were all freed on August 15.
