Man posts about dosa made of ‘egg water’ at ‘Chochi airport’; Tharoor, others weigh in
Regardless of regional preferences, dosa is likely to be one of the most popular dishes in the country. However, the vegetarian dish has sparked a new debate after a man claimed that he witnessed it being prepared in Kerala with “egg water.” Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has now joined the conversation, along with a large number of other netizens.
Manish Jain recently posted on Twitter that he was shocked to see “egg water” being used to “bake South Indian food such as Dosa” while at “Cochi” (Kochi) airport. “They simply play with Religious Belief [sic],” Jain wrote in a complaint to the restaurant Earth Lounge. When confronted about their “wrongly” practise, the man claims the staff said the dishes were prepared “as per standard” and that the eatery refused to share its “manual” when asked.
In a subsequent tweet, he urged Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to investigate the incident. In his appeal, he wrote, “Kindly get the Practice stopped to hurt the emotions of Vegetarian and Jain’s Traveling to #Kerala.”
In a limerick that quickly went viral, Tharoor, the Member of Parliament for Thiruvananthapuram, called Jain “an outraged young vegan.” “He “baked” a huge blunder by misinterpreting “thanda” (cold) as “anda” (egg); he should have stuck to chawal & baingan! (rice and brinjal).”
The tweet received a lot of attention on Twitter, and while some people expressed concern about the lack of vegetarian restaurants in the state, others dismissed Jain’s claims as “baseless.”
Others, like Tharoor, argued that the man misheard it as ‘anda paani’ when the eatery staff said ‘thanda paani,’ because cold water is frequently splashed on the hot tawa before the batter is poured. Many internet users pointed out that Jain misspelt Kochi as “Chochi” and that dosa is not “baked,” as he claimed in his tweet.
