M Karunanidhi passed away at 94

M KarunanidhiM Karunanidhi the longest-serving lawmaker in Indian history and winner of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) politics took his last breath at Chennai’s Kauvery Hospital, today. The oldest Chief Minister passed was at 94 years, after multiple organ failure. Kalaignar Karunanidhi’s departure has devised the state in deep mourning. Thousands of followers outside the Kauvery Hospital in Chennai broke down on hearing the news as responses came flowing in from across the country and globe.

 

Karunanidhi started his career as a screenwriter at the age of 20 and he has worked in about 40 films over the course of time. Dravidian politics and Tamil cinema developed together and benefited from each other’s success.

The multifaceted personality and gritty fighter spirit in him have overcome several challenges during his public life. He has been a member of the State Legislative Assembly 13 times since 1957 and from seven distinct constituencies and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for five times.

MK Stalin one of Karunanidhi’s six children addressed a moving poem says “he often call Karunanidhi, his father, “Leader” rather than “Appa or Dad”.
