Davos Summit To Begin Today, Set To Be Global Leaders’ Biggest Post-Covid Gathering

On Monday, hundreds of people, including about a hundred delegates from India, will assemble for the largest gathering of world leaders in this snow-covered Swiss ski resort town to explore “cooperation in a divided world.”

With the crystal awards ceremony, the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting for this year will get underway.

The annual meeting was held in May last year because the COVID pandemic-related limitations prevented it from taking place in January as usual. The 2021 meeting was place online before that.

Although the pandemic has not yet been completely contained, there are currently very few restrictions, and the conflict in Ukraine and the economic ramifications of both geopolitical and health crises have made the Davos meeting—often referred to as the largest gathering of the world’s elite—extremely interesting.

Over 50 heads of state or government are anticipated for the summit starting on Monday. Four Union ministers from India, including Mansukh Mandaviya, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Smriti Irani, and R. K. Singh, as well as Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, would also be in attendance.

Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, and B S Bommai, the chief minister of Karnataka, were previously on the list but are unlikely to attend the summit. Raghav Chaddha, the leader of the AAP, as well as the ministers for Tamil Nadu and Telangana, Thangam Thennarasu, are there.

Business executives that are anticipated to be there include Gautam Adani, Sanjiv Bajaj, Kumar Mangalam Birla, N. Chandrasekaran, Nadir Godrej, Ajit Gulabchand, Sajjan Jindal, Sunil Mittal, Roshni Nadar Malhotra, Nandan Nilekani, Adar Poonawalla, Rishad Premji, and Sumant Sinha.

The gathering will exhort international leaders to confront the current food, energy, and economic challenges while setting the foundation for a more resilient and sustainable global community. Idris Elba, an actor, director, and philanthropist, and Sabrina Dhowre Elba, a model, actress, and humanitarian, were named UN Goodwill Ambassadors for IFAD in April 2020.
