Indian Sailors Stranded Near Iran Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions
Dozens of Indian sailors stranded near the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas say they are desperate to return home as rising tensions and attacks in the Strait of Hormuz disrupt shipping routes. Many crew members have been stuck at sea for weeks while drones and missiles strike nearby vessels, leaving sailors fearful for their safety.
Around 23,000 Indian seafarers work across ships operating in the Gulf region, which has been heavily affected by the conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. Hundreds of cargo ships and tankers are currently waiting for safe passage through the strategic waterway after several attacks reportedly killed three Indian crew members and left another missing.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had earlier warned vessels about passing through the strait, while sailors reported seeing drones, fighter jets and burning ships nearby. Indian authorities say they are coordinating with regional governments to ensure the safety of their nationals and secure safe passage for stranded crews.
