Indian Artefacts Stolen in Major Bristol Museum Heist
Over 600 artefacts, including several of Indian origin, were stolen during a major burglary at the Bristol Museum’s British Empire and Commonwealth collection on September 25, Avon and Somerset Police confirmed. The stolen items include an ivory Buddha and a waist belt buckle once owned by an East India Company officer, all of which hold significant historical and cultural value.
Police have released CCTV images of four male suspects and are urging the public to help identify those involved. Detective Constable Dan Burgan described the theft as a serious loss for the city, noting that many of the missing artefacts were donations meant to preserve layered aspects of British colonial history. Investigations are ongoing with forensic checks, CCTV analysis, and communication with affected parties.
Authorities are appealing to anyone who might recognise the suspects or who may have seen stolen items being sold online. The museum explained that the collection, which includes thousands of artefacts, films, and records from former British colonies, is crucial for understanding complex histories. The reason behind the delayed public appeal remains unclear, but efforts to recover the items continue.
