Prada Turns Backlash Into Collaboration With India for €800 Luxury Sandals

Prada will release a €800 ($930) limited-edition sandal collection made in India, transforming a cultural appropriation backlash into a cross-continental collaboration with local artisans. After criticism over designs resembling traditional Kolhapuri chappals showcased at Milan Fashion Week, the luxury brand partnered with artisan-development bodies LIDCOM and LIDKAR to produce 2,000 handcrafted pairs in Maharashtra and Karnataka, blending Indian craftsmanship with Italian manufacturing expertise.

The sandals will go on sale globally in February 2026 across 40 Prada stores and online. As part of a three-year partnership, Prada will support skill-exchange programmes, training initiatives, and short-term learning opportunities at its Academy in Italy. Artisans hope the association will revive the endangered Kolhapuri craft, boost earnings, attract younger workers, and increase global recognition for India’s leather heritage.

Prada confirmed that while the collaboration marks a major step in engaging with India’s craftsmanship, the brand has no immediate plans to expand its retail presence or establish factories in India. The company sees India’s fast-growing luxury market—projected to reach $30 billion by 2030—as a significant future opportunity, but is choosing a slower, independent entry rather than partnering with local conglomerates.
