DGCA Summons IndiGo CEO Again Amid Widespread Flight Chaos

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers has been called for another appearance before the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) as the regulator intensifies its probe into the airline’s ongoing operational crisis. IndiGo, which holds over 65% of India’s domestic aviation market, has been grappling with widespread disruptions triggered by planning lapses linked to new pilot duty and rest norms implemented on November 1.

To address the growing chaos, the DGCA has deployed officials to IndiGo’s Gurugram headquarters to monitor key functions such as operations, refunds, compensation, and baggage handling. A four-member committee—comprising senior officers including Joint DG Sanjay Brahamane and Deputy Director General Amit Gupta—has been tasked with identifying root causes behind the mass cancellations that stranded tens of thousands of passengers nationwide.

As part of the oversight, DGCA teams are conducting on-site inspections across 11 major airports, with each officer required to submit a detailed report within 24 hours. IndiGo has cancelled over 4,000 flights since December 2, peaking at 1,600 cancellations on December 5. Following the disruptions, the Civil Aviation Ministry has ordered the airline to cut its winter schedule by 10%, reducing its daily operations of over 2,200 flights.
