India Strengthens Nuclear Ties with Russia
India is reinforcing its long-standing civil nuclear partnership with Russia as it aims to expand its nuclear energy capacity to 100 GW by 2047. Speaking at the virtual conference India and Russia: Towards a New Bilateral Agenda, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project as a prime example of successful collaboration between India’s Nuclear Power Corporation and Russia’s Atomstroyexport.
The two nations, building on agreements from Russian President Vladimir Putin’s December 2025 visit to India, plan to deepen cooperation across the nuclear fuel cycle, VVER reactor technology, and joint manufacturing of nuclear equipment. Beyond energy, India-Russia ties now include mobility of skilled professionals, health, maritime collaboration, fertilizers, and cultural exchanges, alongside a goal to raise bilateral trade from $68.7 billion to $100 billion by 2030.
India’s nuclear ambitions are backed by the ‘Nuclear Energy Mission for Viksit Bharat,’ aiming to grow nuclear generation from 8.78 GW today to 22 GW by 2032 and 100 GW by 2047. Currently, nuclear power contributes about 3.1% of India’s electricity, but with Russian support and strategic partnerships, the government seeks a major shift toward sustainable atomic energy.
