India Introduces Standard Pack Sizes for Cooking Oils

India has introduced new rules requiring cooking oil manufacturers and importers to sell edible oils only in a set of standard pack sizes. The move aims to make it easier for consumers to compare prices across brands and identify the best value when purchasing everyday cooking essentials.

Under the new regulation, edible oils will be available in nine standard pack sizes ranging from 200 ml to 20 litres. The rules cover both domestic and imported oils, including palm, soybean, sunflower, mustard, and groundnut oils. Companies have been given three months to transition to the approved packaging formats.

The government has also mandated that packs displaying volume measurements must mention the equivalent weight to improve price transparency. Smaller packs below 200 ml and certain minor edible oils are exempt. Officials said the decision was taken after consultations with industry bodies representing nearly 90% of India’s edible oil sector.
