India Calls “Baseless” Reports It Helped Lanka President Flee To Maldives

The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka has denied media claims that claimed India helped President Gotabaya Rajapaksa leave the nation, calling them “baseless” and “speculative.” According to accounts, Gotabaya left the island nation in turmoil hours before he was supposed to step down from his position. The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka tweeted, “High Commission firmly condemns false and speculative media accusations that India aided the recent reported travel of @gotabayar @Realbrajapaksa out of Sri Lanka.”

The statement said, “It is emphasised that India will continue to help the people of Sri Lanka in their efforts to realise their goals for prosperity and advancement through democratic means and ideals, established democratic institutions, and constitutional framework.

Officials in Sri Lanka confirmed on Wednesday that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his wife, along with two bodyguards, travelled to the Maldives with the full clearance of the nation’s Defense Ministry.

The Sri Lankan Air Force also stated in a statement that the action was taken in accordance with the president’s executive authority.

Early on Wednesday, Gotabaya touched down at Velana International Airport in the Maldives. The departure of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was also confirmed by the Prime Minister’s Office.

On July 11, Gotabaya signed a letter of resignation that was to be given to the Speaker of Parliament for today’s announcement (July 13).

In order to serve as interim President until a new President is elected by Parliament on July 20, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will be sworn in today. On July 19, nominations for the presidency will be requested.
