Elusive Tiger Cub Roaming On Bhopal College Campus Caught On Camera

A tiger cub that has been roaming about on the Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT) campus for the past five days was finally captured on camera, according to a forest officer. After forest officials discovered pug tracks and confirmed the presence of the huge cat on campus last Thursday, the famous institute switched for a day to online instruction, the official revealed on Sunday.

As some staff members own livestock, the tiger is said to have killed two cows on the MANIT campus. According to the institute’s registrar Binod Doley, the 650-acre campus, which has 6,000 or so students, is dispersed among 100 acres of thickets.

“Our cameras have taken images of the male tiger cub T-123-4, aged more than two years and born to T-123, on the MANIT campus on Saturday,” Bhopal divisional forest officer (DFO) Alok Pathak said. It took at least 50 forest workers five days to set up cameras to record the feline, but on Saturday, he claimed, their efforts were rewarded.

Tiger behaviour research has shown that they leave a location after seven to eight days. The animal has been on campus for six days and, according to the official, it might go in a couple more days.

He claimed that tigers establish 25 sq km of territory within which they roam, killing prey and sleeping.

According to the official, the huge cat lived in a low-lying location that was similar to a ravine that covered 300–400 acres of forest and was connected to the thickets on the MANIT campus.

According to MANIT registrar Doley, 5,000 hostellers residing on campus and at least 1,000 persons who are related to staff members and professors have been requested to stay indoors throughout the night and in the early morning hours when it is dark.

“We have practised drills to deal with emergencies on campus,” he stated.
