Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Set for Major Redevelopment into 102-Acre Sports City

Delhi’s iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium may soon be dismantled to make space for a state-of-the-art 102-acre Sports City, according to Sports Ministry sources. The project is part of India’s larger plan to upgrade its sports infrastructure as it prepares to bid for the 2036 Olympic Games. Authorities are currently conducting studies and reviewing global models from countries like Qatar and Australia to determine the best redevelopment approach.

If approved, the transformation would include world-class competition venues, cutting-edge training centres, and high-performance athlete facilities built to international standards. Considered one of India’s most ambitious sports upgrades, the Sports City aims to provide top-tier amenities that can support both elite athletes and grassroots development, positioning India strongly for hosting major global events.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, originally constructed for the 1982 Asian Games and renovated for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, has long been a hub for national sporting and cultural activities. Recently, it hosted the World Para Athletics Championships with a newly installed mondo track costing around ₹30 crore. Though discussions are ongoing with no fixed timeline yet, officials state that construction will begin once assessments and the master plan are finalised.
