Modi to Strengthen Energy and Development Partnerships During Bhutan Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-day official visit to Bhutan on November 11-12, focusing on deepening cooperation in energy, infrastructure, and development initiatives. The visit aligns with India’s efforts to reinforce its long-standing partnership with Bhutan, especially as China seeks to expand its regional influence.

During his visit, Modi and Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk will inaugurate the jointly developed 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project. The Indian PM will also participate in events marking the 70th birth anniversary of Bhutan’s fourth king, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, and hold discussions with Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay. The ongoing exposition of the Sacred Piprahwa Relics of Lord Buddha in Bhutan also highlights the spiritual bond between the two nations.

Talks are expected to further advance India’s development partnership with Bhutan, backed by New Delhi’s commitment of ₹10,000 crore under the Himalayan nation’s 13th Five Year Plan. This support covers major community development projects, budgetary grants, and economic stimulus measures. This marks Modi’s fourth Bhutan visit since 2014, reaffirming India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ strategy and its role as Bhutan’s primary development and security partner.
